The Journey
Welcome to the Faculty of Education, Language and Communication (FELC) – where dynamic education meets community engagement! FELC’s thoughtfully designed curriculum and student activities aim to equip students with both theoretical and practical skills to become adaptable and sustainable graduates.
Early Formation
Early Formation
FELC was originally established on December 1, 1993, as the Centre for Language Studies (CLS) with the aim of empowering both students and staff with language skills. The centre offered courses in Malay, English, and third languages, and in 1994, it introduced the joint Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) programme with the Faculty of Cognitive Sciences and Human Development, enrolling its first 31 undergraduate students.
In 1996, the centre was renamed as the Centre for Language and Communication Studies (CLCS) to include the complementary field of communication studies. However, in 2000, the Communication Studies programme returned to the Faculty of Social Sciences, and CLCS was renamed once again as the Centre for Language Studies.

In 2004, the centre merged with the Faculty of Cognitive Sciences and Human Development. Although the TESL programme was believed to be better served under a faculty, they later separated and relocated to their respective buildings on the new campus in 2006. CLS continued to expand and in 2014, the Linguistics Programme was introduced.
Strategic Evolution
Strategic Evolution
Due to the vision of the Vice Chancellor, CLS was upgraded in January 2016 to the Faculty of Language Studies and Communication Studies (FLSCS) through the merger of CLS and the Communication Studies programme. The Communication Studies programme underwent a significant curriculum review and transformed into the Strategic Communication programme. FLSCS was rebranded as the Faculty of Language and Communication (FLC) in July 2017.
Focusing Forward
In August 2023, FLC underwent another rebranding process, adding an education component to its programme and changing its name to Faculty of Education, Language and Communication (FELC). Today, FELC offers a diverse range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs, including Linguistics, Strategic Communication, and English for Global Communication. Our aim is simple yet profound: to equip students with the skills and knowledge to excel in an ever-evolving global landscape.
Join us at FELC and embark on a journey of growth, discovery, and empowerment.
